Travel to Edirne

By plane

There are flights from most of the major cities around the world to Atatürk International Airport in Istanbul. A metro line providing an easy access to the main bus depot (otogar) in Edirne operates regularly.

By bus

The easiest way to reach Edirne from Istanbul is by bus which is an about 2 h 40 min ride. The bus fare is about 45 Turkish Lira (10 €). Midi-buses will take you from the bus depot to the city center (final stop is near Selimiye mosque where city offices of the bus companies are located) free of charge.

There are direct buses operating between several Bulgarian and Greek cities and Istanbul. Some busses from several Balkan cities pass through Edirne on their way to Istanbul. The ports of entry to Turkey for the travels arriving from Bulgaria are Kapikule, Andreevo (20 km to Edirne city) and Hamzabeyli (40 km to Edirne city) and Pazarkule (5 km to Edirne city) for the attendees arriving through Greece.

By train

There are two daily trains from Istanbul Sirkeci station to Edirne (one at 8:30 am, and the other one at 3:50 pm). The railroad trip is about 4 h. There are also train services from several European cities to Istanbul that stop in Edirne.

The main station (Edirne Gar) lies about 4 km east of downtown, close to the main avenue heading eastern suburbs of the city (which is also the main highway to Istanbul). All the trains going to Kapıkule (port of entry on the Bulgarian border) and stop at Edirne Şehir station on their.

By car

Edirne is on the main highways linking Turkey and Europe (road numbers: toll-free D100 and toll-road/motorway O-3/E80). The drive takes no more than two hours from Istanbul (224 km away) to Edirne on the motorway. The main European-Turkish port of entry, Kapikule/Kapitan Andreevo (between Turkey and Bulgaria, SE of Svilengrad) is about 15-20 km away from the city.

Visas

All participants are advised to check with the Turkish Consular Missions in their country for visa requirements. You can also check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website about visa requirements details. (www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa). The organizers of the Congress will issue a letter of invitation to the registered participants requiring a visa.

In addition to the special precautions taken by the host authorities, medical facilities available at the Hotel will be at the disposal of the participants.

Local time in Istanbul is GMT + 2 hours.

Working Hours

Banks are open weekdays from 8:30 am until noon (or 12:30), depending on the bank, and from 1:30 pm until 5:00 pm. However, there are some banks which continue to serve during lunch breaks. Museums are generally open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm and closed on Monday. Shops and bazaars are normally open from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm and closed all day on Sundays. But shopping malls and stores on main streets are open seven days a week, including lunch breaks. You can find restaurants or cafes open virtually at any time of the day or night.

Weekend Holidays

In Turkey, Saturday and Sunday are weekend holiday. Therefore, official institutions and banks are closed.

Currency and Exchange

The currency in Turkey is Turkish Lira (TL), which comes in bank notes of 5 TL; 10 TL; 20 TL; 50 TL; 100 TL and 200 TL. Smaller denominations will come in coins of 1 TL; 50 Kr; 25 Kr; 10 Kr; 5 Kr; and 1 Kr." Kr. stands for "Kuruş". 100 Kuruş is worth 1 Turkish Lira.

The currency exchange rates may be accessed at the website of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (http://www.tcmb.gov.tr/wps/wcm/connect/tcmb+en/tcmb+en). Convertible foreign currency can be exchanged at the airport, hotels and exchange offices as well as at all banks in accordance with the daily announced exchange rates at the time. In Turkey, travel checks are rarely accepted. We recommend that you cash your travelers' checks at the banks. ATMs can be found in even the smallest Turkish towns. Most accept international credit cards or bank cards (a strip of logos is usually displayed above the ATM). Almost all ATMs have a language key to enable you to read the instructions in English.

VAT & Service Charges

Value - Added Tax (VAT), in Turkey called KDV, is 18%. VAT is usually included in the quoted prices.

Credit Cards

International credit cards are widely used in Turkey almost in every shops. Major credit cards (American Express, Visa, Diner's Club, MasterCard, Access, JCB, Eurocard, etc.) are accepted in most establishments. Most ATMs accept international credit/bank cards.

Electricity Supply

The electrical current in Turkey is 220 volts, 50 cycles alternating current (AC). Wall outlets take Continental - style plugs with two round prongs.

Communication

Turkey has an advanced communication system. In addition to the traditional postal and telephone services, GSM telephones can be used through international roaming agreements. Please contact your GSM Operator for more information. It is possible to use most cellular phones in Turkey. Public telephones have two different systems. Some of them work with cards while others work with tokens. They are both sold in post offices and tobacco shops. For international calls it is advisable to purchase cards. In Turkey, phone numbers consists of two sections: area code with three digits and the number itself with 7 digits. Just dial 7 - digit number in the city. For long distance calls dial 0 + area code +7 - digit number. For international calls dial 0 + 0 + country code + area code + number.
